Exciting News for Sunrise Northeast: Camp Harkness Welcomes New Accessible Playground

Exciting developments are happening at Camp Harkness in Waterford, Connecticut! A newly opened accessible playground is creating more opportunities for persons with disabilities to enjoy outdoor recreation, and the milestone recently received attention from WFSB Channel 3 Eyewitness News.

The new playground, celebrated during an October ribbon-cutting event, represents a meaningful investment in making recreational spaces more accessible for people of varying abilities.

Creating More Opportunities for Everyone

The $620,000 playground, recognized as the largest of its kind in Connecticut, was designed with accessibility in mind, providing opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to play, explore, and enjoy the outdoors.

For Sunrise Community, this exciting addition holds special meaning.

Through Sunrise Northeast’s Camp Harkness summer program, persons supported with intellectual and developmental disabilities have opportunities to build friendships, explore new experiences, participate in recreational activities, and create lasting memories in a welcoming environment.

The addition of a new accessible playground further strengthens the opportunities available at a location that has long been a special place for persons with disabilities and their families.

Celebrating Progress in Our Community

At Sunrise Community of Northeast, we understand the importance of accessible recreational spaces and the difference they can make in creating meaningful experiences for persons supported.

Whether it’s participating in a new activity, connecting with friends, or simply enjoying time outdoors, these opportunities help promote independence, confidence, and personal growth.

We are excited to see continued improvements at Camp Harkness and appreciate the efforts of Connecticut’s state and community leaders who helped make this new playground possible.

As we celebrate this exciting milestone, we look forward to the memories and experiences this new space will help create for years to come.
