Sunrise Community Takes Advocacy to Capitol Hill: A Look Back at Our Washington, D.C. Visit

Making Our Voices Heard on Capitol Hill

Advocacy, leadership, and a little friendly competition! This October, Sunrise Community staff traveled to Washington, D.C., for a leadership conference that brought team members together to strengthen connections, share ideas, and advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to advocate on Capitol Hill, where Sunrise leaders and staff engaged in productive conversations with legislators and congressional representatives.

These discussions provided an opportunity to emphasize the importance of services, resources, and continued support for the IDD community.

At Sunrise Community, advocacy is an important part of our mission to create valued lives for people with disabilities. Opportunities like these allow our team to bring attention to the needs of persons supported and the dedicated professionals who help make meaningful opportunities possible every day.

Leadership, Teamwork, and a Little Fun!

Beyond the important conversations on Capitol Hill, the leadership conference also provided an opportunity for Sunrise staff to connect, collaborate, and strengthen relationships across our organization.

And of course, there was time for a little fun!

Staff participated in a scavenger hunt throughout the trip, bringing plenty of laughter, creativity, and unforgettable photo opportunities. From silly poses to friendly competition, the activity gave everyone a chance to show off their personalities while creating lasting memories together.

These moments were a reminder that strong teams are built not only through shared goals and meaningful work, but also through connection and camaraderie.

Continuing Our Commitment to Advocacy

As we reflect on this memorable experience, we are proud of our team’s dedication to representing Sunrise Community and advocating for the people we support.

Our time in Washington, D.C., reinforced the importance of collaboration, leadership, and ensuring that the voices and needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities remain part of important conversations.

We look forward to continuing this work and creating more opportunities to advance our mission.

From meaningful conversations on Capitol Hill to laughter-filled moments with colleagues, this trip was a wonderful reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together with a shared purpose. 💙
