Reflecting on the Magic of 2024 Sunrise Camp Harkness

As Sunrise Northeast, Inc. wraps up another incredible summer at Camp Harkness in 2024, we’re excited to share the highlights of our season. This year marked a special milestone as we celebrated over 20 years of camp excellence, welcoming both new and returning campers to join us in the festivities!

Camp Dates and Registration

The 2024 camp season ran for seven weeks from June 17th to August 2nd, with sessions ranging from one to two weeks.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Before diving into this year’s highlights, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the Chelsea Groton Foundation. Their generous $3,000 donation to our “Cuisine Kits Project” was instrumental in defraying the food costs for our camp participants. This support allowed us to provide three nutritious meals a day, ensuring that every camper had the energy and vitality to fully enjoy their camp experience. You can learn more about the Chelsea Groton Foundation and their commitment to community support here.

A Legacy of Support and Commitment

The Chelsea Groton Foundation has been a steadfast supporter of Sunrise Northeast, Inc. for many years, and we are profoundly grateful for their unwavering commitment. Their ongoing generosity has played a vital role in enriching the experiences and opportunities we offer to those we serve.

A Special Visit from Ms. Catherine L. Young

Earlier this month, we had the distinct honor of welcoming Ms. Catherine L. Young, Board Member of the Chelsea Groton Foundation, to Sunrise Camp Harkness. Her visit was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the tangible impact of their contributions on our programs and the lives of our participants. It was inspiring to see firsthand the connection between the Foundation’s support and the joy and growth experienced by our camp attendees.

Quotes and Stories from Camp Harkness

To capture the essence of Camp Harkness, we spoke with Franz Weibezahn, our dedicated Camp Director, and Jacqueline Conley, our State Director:

What makes Camp Harkness unique from year to year?

Jacqueline Conley, the dedicated State Director, emphasized the inclusive nature of the camp. “Camp Harkness is unique because it provides individuals with developmental and physical disabilities the full camp experience. From reconnecting with friends and staff to enjoying activities like boating, nature walks, and arts and crafts, our campers have the opportunity to fully participate and thrive,” she explained.

Franz also shared a particularly touching moment that encapsulates the spirit of Camp Harkness.

“During our Talent Show, a camper who was initially shy and reserved took the stage to sing a solo. The entire camp cheered him on, and the joy on his face was priceless. It was a beautiful reminder of the supportive and uplifting community we have here.” he said.

Looking Ahead

We are immensely grateful to donors like the Chelsea Groton Foundation, whose generous contributions helped enhance our programs and support campers in need. Their support played a crucial role in the success of the 2024 camp season.
