Every year on December 3rd, Sunrise Community joins people around the world in recognizing International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This is a day dedicated to honoring the voices, talents, and experiences of all persons with disabilities. It’s a moment to reflect, to celebrate, and to recommit ourselves to building a world where everyone belongs.
This year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” speaks to something we know well at Sunrise: when people are included, supported, and valued, our whole community grows stronger.
Inclusion isn’t just a practice. It’s a feeling of being seen, heard, and welcomed for who you are. There are no barriers that exist in our world. Every day across Sunrise programs, we bring that feeling come to life.
- We see it when a person supported reaches a new goal.
- We see it in our day programs, residential homes, workplaces, and community spaces where barriers fall away.
- We see it in the relationships built between staff, families, community partners, and the amazing people we support.
This day reminds us that creating a disability-inclusive society takes all of us working together, advocating, listening, learning, and making room for everyone to participate fully in helping create valued lives for those we support. That’s how real progress happens.
At Sunrise Community, we remain committed to:
- Supporting independence
- Encouraging meaningful community connections
- Promoting accessibility and opportunity
- And most importantly, uplifting the voices of persons supported
Today, we celebrate their achievements, their strengths, and the unique contributions they bring to the world. They are the heart of our mission and the driving force behind our efforts to create a future filled with inclusion and opportunity.
