Each year on July 26, we celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark civil rights law signed into law in 1990. The ADA was established to help ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to employment, education, transportation, public accommodations, and many other aspects of everyday life.
More than three decades later, the ADA continues to serve as an important foundation for creating accessible and inclusive communities where people with disabilities have the opportunity to live, work, learn, and participate fully.
At Sunrise Community, the principles of the ADA are reflected in our mission every day. We are honored to support persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities by promoting independence, encouraging meaningful relationships, and creating opportunities for each person to pursue their goals and live a valued life within their community.
The anniversary of the ADA is also an opportunity to recognize the progress that has been made while acknowledging that there is always more work to do. Accessibility extends beyond ramps and doorways, it includes fostering welcoming environments, removing barriers, promoting understanding, and ensuring that every person has the opportunity to participate and be heard.
As we celebrate this important milestone, we encourage our community to:
- Learn about the history and impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Promote accessibility and inclusion in everyday spaces.
- Recognize the contributions and achievements of people with disabilities.
- Support opportunities that empower persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities to thrive in their communities.
- Continue building communities where every person is treated with dignity, respect, and equal opportunity.
At Sunrise Community, we are proud to stand alongside the persons we support, their families, our employees, and community partners as we continue working toward a more inclusive future.
Together, we celebrate the legacy of the ADA and the opportunities it has created while remaining committed to building communities where everyone belongs.
Happy ADA Anniversary from all of us at Sunrise Community!
