It's that time of year --- St. Patrick's Day by guest blogger Hector
Is it that time of the year to wear green again yet?? Of course it is. St. Patrick is around the corner. It's the traditional Ireland that we all love. It's the day that most people wear green, and whoever it's not wearing green, he/she gets pinched. In college, I saw a few people wearing green on this day. I used to joke around people and pinched if they were not wearing green. Some people liked, some people did not. I only pinched people I know, and some cute girls to see how they would react. The cute girls just kissed me on the cheek, and the other people just gave warnings, " if you pinch me again, I will unplugged your chair (joke mode)," and I was like "bring it," and i took off as fas...

Tampa's Table To Farm Benefit Postponed
Sunrise Community of Hillsborough's Table to Farm Fundraiser scheduled for Sunday, January 29, 2017 has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstance. While it is not the blizzard of 1977, this weekend Tampa is expecting rain, wind and temperatures dropping into the 50's. To ensure a better outdoor dining experience, the event will be re-scheduled for April or May in coordination with The Craft Bar Kitchen and Old Micky's Farm. And for all of our foodies, the Chef has assured us that new date will still offer a culinary experience like no other! Hope to see you there.

Back in 2015, two viral hashtags inspired thousands of Twitter users worldwide to share proud selfies and empowering narratives of living with disability The following year in 2016, the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities launched its “I am able…” “selfie” awareness campaign to celebrate the varying abilities of New Yorkers everywhere. Since then, the selfie trend continues to challenge traditional stereotypes about self-advocates. Sunrise's own, Social Media Maverick, Hector Valencia, carries on the selfie tradition with his favorite hockey team here in South Florida.

Sunrise Artists Honored By President Obama
Last week, an honor that was, literally, "years in the making" surprised a team of local artists. Members included Albert, Victor, Maximo, Danyell, Camille, Robert, Kyle, Pascale, Terese and Jose who receive services at the Doral Adult Day Program. Their collective art featured a unique rendition of the American Flag that took over five months to assemble. The 30" x 47" work of art was presented to President Obama in late 2016 by Florida Senator Dwight Bullard (D-39.) The artists are very proud of their creative work and equally as proud of the work that President Obama has done to protect and expand the rights of people with disabilities.
