Sunrise Holiday Celebrations Spread Across the East Coast
With operations stretching from Connecticut down to South Florida, holiday cheer has been in the air since the day after Thanksgiving! Snowflakes and icicles sprung up to adorn group homes, day programs and supported employment centers in the northeast. Reindeer, yule logs and chestnuts are roasting in the Great Smoky Mountains. Meanwhile, palm trees, sea shells and boats have been decked out in lights in South Florida. Staff and those we serve have been busy celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Milad un Nabi (which is celebrated by exchanging gifts and making donations to the poor.) We wish the joy of the 2016 holiday season to you and yours!

Inclusive Voices: "Rogue One" Is A Winner for Diversity
The greater disabilities community has long recognized that media images mold society's attitudes. For that reason, self-advocates continue to push for greater representation of people with disabilities on TV as well as on the big screen. However, diversity in mainstream entertainment all too often remains the exception rather than the rule. That is why Sunrise self-advocate and Blogger, Hector Leonardo, is excited about the upcoming premier of Rogue One. The self-described "Stars Wars fanatic" cannot wait to see a leading cast that consists of a female lead along with Hispanic, Asian,Anglo-Pakistani, and African-American main characters. And two of the main characters have disabilities! Like real life, all of the characters are comfortable with one other and they are united in their fight! Kudos Rogue One!!

Lakeland's Adult Day Center Continues Its Tradition of Giving Back
In the spirit of inspiring even more Americans to increase their charitable giving this holiday season, the Lakeland Sunrise aKtion Club participated in the “Adopt an Angel” project through the Salvation Army. Funds for the gifts were raised by aKtion Club Members via a Pancake Breakfast on November 30, 2016. All the proceeds were used to buy everything on the angel wish list. Thanks to the generosity of Sunrise self-advocates, Christmas morning will be bright for children in Lakeland! We are very proud of our aKtion club for their hard work, warm hearts, and dedication to our community!

Compliance Announces the Winners of the 2016 Rap Battle & Mannequin Challenge
Sunrise’s Third Annual Compliance Rap Battle featured the latest trend, the Mannequin Challenge. The Mannequin Challenge is a viral Internet video sensation where people “freeze” like mannequins while a moving camera films them from various angles. Usually the video plays with the song "Black Beatles" by Rae Sremmurd in the background. As with years past, competition from across the Sunrise system was fierce! And while Sunrise’s elusive Mar-yonce did not make an appearance at the Awards Ceremony. MC Extraordinaire, Gee Z closed out the event with a nail-biting Season 3 conclusion to “Entire,” the series. CONGRATS TO ALL SUNRISE TEAMS!!!
