Why Medicaid Matters: Protecting Essential Services for People with Disabilities

Medicaid is more than just a healthcare program—it’s a lifeline for millions of people, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). At Sunrise Community, we see firsthand how Medicaid-funded services empower individuals to live independently, receive vital care, and fully participate in their communities. However, recent discussions about potential Medicaid budget cuts could put these essential services at risk.

What’s Happening?

A new report from The Century Foundation highlights proposed federal Medicaid spending reductions ranging from $100 billion to $500 billion over the next decade. These cuts could significantly impact Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS), which provide support for people with disabilities to live at home instead of institutions.

  • A $100 billion cut could reduce HCBS funding by 9%
  • A $250 billion cut could result in a 23% decrease
  • A $500 billion cut could reduce funding by nearly 45%

These numbers aren’t just statistics, they represent real people who depend on Medicaid for daily living support, employment assistance, transportation, and other critical services.

Why This Matters

Medicaid helps individuals with disabilities lead fulfilling, independent lives. This could mean:
✅ Fewer opportunities for individuals to receive care
✅ Increased pressure on families and caregivers
✅ Reduced access to essential services

Because states share the cost of Medicaid, these cuts could also force state governments to make difficult choices—either reducing services, limiting access, or increasing waitlists.

What Can We Do?

At Sunrise Community, we are committed to advocating for policies that protect Medicaid and the individuals who rely on it. Here’s how you can help:
🔹 Stay informed – Follow updates on Medicaid policy and understand how changes could impact the disability community.
🔹 Engage with lawmakers – Reach out to elected officials to express why Medicaid funding must be preserved.

Together, We Can Make a Difference
