The Sunrise family was saddened to hear about the passing of Dick Hoyt, Boston Marathon icon and disability advocate. Dick and his son, Rick, are recognized within the disability community for running in 32 Boston Marathons together.
Sunrise held our first “Life without Limits – Run/Walk” 5K run in 2011. A Sunrise employee reached out to Dick Hoyt to ask if he would consider supporting our 5K. Dick agreed to attend our 5K in 2012 and did so for several years. Sunrise staff recall that the Hoyt Team would always ensure that all runners in their team had a “partner” to enjoy the race. Often, they would invite the individuals we support to be their “partners.” Not surprisingly, partners, families, and staff agreed that this was an unforgettable and fun time.
“Running is an independent sport, but the running community is a tight-knit Team. There are many noted influential runners, but none more iconic to me than Dick and Rick Hoyt’s Team. As an avid runner, I have endured the highs and lows of running a marathon. To be part of the .5% of the US population to finish a marathon is humbling but knowing that Dick and Rick have completed 32 Boston Marathons as a Team is inspiring.
Having been able to run alongside them in the Life Without Limits 5k is something that I treasure as a runner, as someone who has devoted their entire adult life to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, and as a mother who provided this experience to her son. The dedication that Dick had in ensuring that his son was included in his community inspired me to ensure that my son understood the importance of inclusion for everyone. Dick’s legacy will shine in the running community for years to come, and I am confident that Rick will continue to inspire us to highlight the need for inclusion for people with all abilities.”
