Empowering Lives: Martesha Jones’ Journey to Supporting Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities at Sunrise Community

At Sunrise Community, we are proud to have team members who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of those we support. One such individual is Martesha Jones, whose journey within the organization is a testament to her dedication, quick thinking, and commitment to growth.

A Leap of Faith

Martesha began her career in the industry as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at a previous organization. After gaining valuable experience and getting promoted to a service coordinator, she continued to deepen her understanding of supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. When she came across an opening at Sunrise Community for a DSP position, she immediately saw an opportunity to grow.

“I initially applied for the DSP role, but during the interview, they asked if I had considered a management position,” Martesha shared. “I was quick on my feet and responded, ‘Both!’ And just like that, they offered me the role of Residential Manager. It was a moment of opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

The Importance of Hands-On Experience

Martesha credits her time as a DSP for equipping her with the skills and knowledge necessary for her current role. She believes strongly that anyone looking to move into management within this field should first work as a DSP.

“It’s important to know the day-to-day lives of the people you support,” she said. “Being a DSP helps you understand the rhythm of the home, the needs of the individuals, and the best ways to care for them. You can’t be an effective manager without that foundation.”

Life as a Residential Manager

Now as a Residential Manager, Martesha balances administrative duties with hands-on involvement. “A lot of what I do happens behind the scenes—dealing with paperwork, guardians, case managers, and scheduling. But I’m also on the ground, helping out whenever needed, ensuring the people we support are engaged and happy.”

Martesha takes pride in organizing weekly activities, like trips to the movies or local bowling alleys. “It’s important to keep them active and engaged. When they’re involved in fun and stimulating activities, it encourages positive interactions and well-being. So we make sure to plan a variety of affordable outings.” She added that teamwork with her DSPs is key: “As a manager, it’s crucial to stay involved with the DSPs because their work is the foundation of our success.”

Overcoming Challenges and Making Strides

Martesha’s leadership and consistency have made a huge difference in the lives of those she supports. She shared the story of one individual who struggled with wearing clothes, preferring to stay undressed all day. Through careful routine and coordination with all staff members, this individual now dresses every morning, a huge accomplishment that has improved his quality of life.

“I set goals for each person, and when those goals are achieved, it’s incredibly rewarding,” she said. “Watching someone grow and develop is the best part of my job.”

Looking Forward

Martesha’s goals for the future are clear—further reduce behaviors through consistent routines and help her staff improve communication and development. “It’s all about creating a safe, engaging environment where both staff and the people we support can thrive.”

Sunrise Community is lucky to have leaders like Martesha Jones, who continue to make a meaningful impact every day.
