Sunrise Artists Honored By President Obama

Last week, an honor that was, literally, "years in the making" surprised a team of local artists. Members included Albert, Victor, Maximo, Danyell, Camille, Robert, Kyle, Pascale, Terese and Jose who receive services at the Doral Adult Day Program. Their collective art featured a unique rendition of the American Flag that took over five months to assemble. The 30" x 47" work of art was presented to President Obama in late 2016 by Florida Senator Dwight Bullard (D-39.) The artists are very proud of their creative work and equally as proud of the work that President Obama has done to protect and expand the rights of people with disabilities.

Inclusive Voices: "Rogue One" Is A Winner for Diversity

The greater disabilities community has long recognized that media images mold society's attitudes. For that reason, self-advocates continue to push for greater representation of people with disabilities on TV as well as on the big screen. However, diversity in mainstream entertainment all too often remains the exception rather than the rule. That is why Sunrise self-advocate and Blogger, Hector Leonardo, is excited about the upcoming premier of Rogue One. The self-described "Stars Wars fanatic" cannot wait to see a leading cast that consists of a female lead along with Hispanic, Asian,Anglo-Pakistani, and African-American main characters. And two of the main characters have disabilities! Like real life, all of the characters are comfortable with one other and they are united in their fight! Kudos Rogue One!!

Sunrise Appreciates Esserman International's Generosity On #GivingTuesday

After watching the progress of the #GivingTuesday movement since its inception in 2012, Sunrise decided to go “all out” in 2016 and we kicked off 15 local initiatives across five of our seven states. Projects ranged from an Early Literacy Library in the Greater Tampa Bay area to sensory integration rooms and assistive technology as well as funds for warm winter clothes for Eastern Tennessee. Unfortunately, fires in the Great Smoky Mountains interrupted three projects in Tennessee on Tuesday as we re-directed efforts to support victims of the natural disaster. That is when Esserman International in Miami swept in with an unexpected donation to Sunrise! Thanks to Esserman's generosity and an online campaign, Sunrise received funds to help with emergency funding. On behalf of all those we serve, our deepest appreciate to Esserman International.

Dedicated DSP in the Spotlight: Greeneville, Tennessee

It’s amazing how a hand-full of select people just seem to “know their dream job” even when most people are still trying to decide their career oath. Choosing the right career is tricky. Economist Neil Howe estimates that only five percent of people find a good career match on the first try. And even beyond this chilling stat, there’s so much external pressure to land the perfect job, follow your passion and be super successful by the end of your 20s. No wonder most people break into a cold sweat when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” That was never the case for Sunrise Community of Tennessee in Greeneville’s Josh Hensley. Josh has known he want to work in the greater disabilities field since before he was even eligible to apply. As he continues his career in the field, Greeneville thanks him for years of dedication, congratulates him on his B.A. and wishes him nothing but the BEST!

Coral Gables PALS Show Up & Paint The Town... Errr, ADT

Kicking off a busy summer of beautification projects for Sunrise, Coral Gables PALs started in Doral. On Wednesday, July 6th, the Adult Day Training Center received updates from the inside out (literally)! Student volunteers started with interior painting on classrooms in the pre-vocational skills area; then spread out to clean the parking lot and finished the day by giving a fresh coat of paint to the asphalt and parking spaces alike. Without the generous support and hands-on engagement of community partners like Coral Gables’ PALs, Sunrise would not be able to serve so many individuals and families across the East Coast. Our deepest appreciation to our PAL teen volunteers!!

Thank you to all Sunrise #Volunteers!

Perhaps the first and biggest benefit people get from volunteering is the satisfaction of incorporating service into their lives and making a difference in their community and country. The intangible benefits alone—such as pride, satisfaction, and accomplishment—are worthwhile reasons to serve. At Sunrise locations from Homestead to Hartford, much of what we do is accomplished with the help of dedicated volunteers who provide service hours, donations and labor to help ensure that people with developmental disabilities live valued lives in the community. Thank you for all you do!
