ith the help of the Coral Gables Police Athletic League (PAL), at the direction of Sunrise employees, the cleanup of Sunrise group homes after Hurricane Irma was a success! A group of teenagers led by Detective Jose Flores of the Coral Gables Police Department took the initiative to help out the weekend after that unforgettable experience.
The Police Athletic League has a year-round program called the Youth Directors Council, a leadership group based on community service. Their mission to help others, no matter where they are in life, is something the teenagers are proud to learn at such a young age.
“The kids realize the work that Sunrise does and how important it is to our community, and they want to give back in any way possible.” Flores said.
Det. Flores does a great job of rallying his volunteers when someone is in need, making it look simple when it comes to helping our community’s non-profit organizations that provide much-needed services to so many of Miami Dade’s citizens.
With debris dispersed around the Sunrise community homes due to damages caused by the hurricane, PAL volunteers helped with clearing up Irma’s aftermath and restored a semblance of normalcy that was much needed to lift everyone’s spirits. Initially, intimidated by the task at hand, these youthful volunteers were divided in small teams and devised a plan of action. Within hours, they accomplished their goals and were able to finish what appeared to be an insurmountable task.
“Projects like these really broaden the volunteers’ horizons when it comes to assisting the community. Whenever they accomplish a new project, it adds to their confidence and reinforces the values that they learn in school and at PAL.” Flores said.
During the summer, PAL and Sunrise Community collaborate at their Adult Day Training Centers, beautifying the facilities by painting, power washing Sunrise’s fleet and helping with the upkeep of their plant nursery located in Homestead.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, the staff at Sunrise Community wishes to thank Detective Flores and all the Coral Gables PAL volunteers for their many “acts of kindness.” “We’re tremendously grateful to PAL and applaud their volunteers for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.” ’ said Jameson Dormann, Sunrise’s Chief of Operations.
